RS Divers has won a long term contract from dredging and marine company Boskalis Westminster Ltd to investigate hundreds of unknown objects on the harbour bed and approach channel at Portsmouth. This preparatory work is essential ahead of extensive dredging before the arrival of the Royal Navy’s new 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers.
A 15-strong team of professional divers is working with the team at Boskalis from a crane barge to inspect the objects, frequently working at night when the harbour is at its quietest. With the emphasis on safety, any explosive devices detected from the second world war or even earlier will be swiftly tackled by Royal Navy bomb disposal experts. A team from Wessex Archaeology will join RS Divers to deal with discoveries of historic importance as and when they are located.
This is still an ongoing project and is expected to continue into the summer.
