Tug Boat Salvage

The BRIEF

Solent Towage contacted RS Divers for help in the salvage operation of their tug Asterix which had capsized in strong winds at the Fawley marine terminal. Of key importance was making sure engine oil and fuel did not pollute Southampton Water.

WORK UNDERTAKEN

First of all, the experienced and professional divers worked with Solent Towage to plan and co-ordinate the salvage operation with no pollution risk to the sensitive environment. Solent Towage put booms around the site before a large crane barge managed by Blade Runner Shipping manoeuvred itself into position. RS Divers spent one day preparing the lift and the following day worked with the crane operators to carefully lift Asterix and pump it out ready for further work by Solent Towage.

THE RESULT

Asterix was safely raised to the surface, pumped out without polluting Southampton Water and handed back to its owner for further investigation by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) into the causes of the sinking. RS Divers have extensive experience of salvaging boats. On average we lift five to ten every year and this was our 30th salvage in all.

The operation was well planned with minimal environmental impact. Many, Many Thanks
